Chapter 18

Bryce was agitated for the rest of the weekend. He felt horrible about Molly’s accident, but he felt equally bad about what had happened with Chloe. He’d been making out with her in the kitchen while his daughter was hurt and bleeding at the emergency clinic.

True, it had happened on Victoria’s watch, but that didn’t excuse what he’d done or been about to do. After that one kiss, he’d been consumed by desire and ready to take Chloe to bed.

If he had, he probably would have missed the call from Victoria, and hours might have passed before he found out Molly was hurt. He could easily envision himself being so wrapped up with Chloe that he wouldn’t have emerged from the bedroom until the next day. What a disaster that would have been. If only he’d kept his hands to himself and not kissed her like she’d asked.

Because of his selfish desires, he’d made everything more complicated, and he and Chloe were back to tiptoeing around each other and only communicating about Molly. The tension between them was so thick that he choked on it, and it killed him to see the hurt look in Chloe’s eyes. Those beautiful, expressive brown eyes that drew him in and threatened to pull him under. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been so enamored with a woman. It might have been when he’d first met Victoria years ago. He certainly hadn’t felt anything like that since—until Chloe.

For the next few days, he stayed out of her way whenever possible. If Molly left the room to go do something, he’d leave too, retreating to his study and pretending to work. He sometimes reviewed and updated patient records at home, but it was just an excuse to avoid Chloe, and they both knew it.

Things finally came to a head on the following Friday evening when he came home from work to find Seb, Chloe, and Molly sitting on the living room floor, playing a board game.

“Hi, Daddy! Uncle Seb came over to visit me, and he brought me a present.”

“He did?”

Molly jumped up and gave him a hug. Her stitches had been removed the day before, and her scrapes were healing nicely. She might have a small scar on her forehead, but that was the least of his concerns.

“Be right back,” Molly said and raced out of the room.

“Don’t worry. I didn’t buy her a dog or anything,” Seb teased. “But I thought about it.”

“We already have a cat,” Bryce said. So far, Chloe hadn’t said a word, but he wasn’t really surprised. They’d barely spoken to each other in the past few days.

“Here it is,” Molly said, running back into the room holding a new Barbie doll. To him, it looked like every other Barbie she owned.

“Did you say thank you?”

“Yes, she did,” Seb answered for her.

“It was a special treat because I fell,” Molly added.

“You’ve been getting a lot of special treats this week,” Bryce said.

Chloe kept mum, and her silence was killing him.
